Carillon recital

On the morning of the Alumni Festival, y...

On the morning of the Alumni Festival, you’ll hear the bells of the carillon chiming from the Clocktower. Isaac Wong, one of our University of Sydney Carillonists, performs on the 54-bell War Memorial Carillon for graduation ceremonies, recitals and special events, and teaching Carillon. Isaac Wong has played the Sydney University Carillon since he was a student at the University’s School of Pharmacy. He was appointed Honorary Carillonist at the University in 2002. Isaac is the first Australian to study at the Royal Carillon School in Belgium, graduating with a High Distinction Diploma in 2009. He has since played several recital tours in Europe and North America. Isaac’s rendition of Game of Thrones on YouTube remains one of the most searched and watched carillon performances online. Join Pulitzer Prize winner and alumni Geraldine Brooks AO (BA 1979) ONLINE streaming live from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, as she discusses her novel Horse with Dr Wendy Were. Australian-born Geraldine Brooks is an author and journalist who grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney, attending Bethlehem College Ashfield and the University of Sydney. She worked as a reporter for The Sydney Morning Herald for three years as a feature writer with a special interest in environmental issues, and later for the National Times. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 2006 for her novel March. Her novels People of the Book, Caleb’s Crossing and The Secret Chord were all New York Times Bestsellers. Her first novel, Year of Wonders, is an international bestseller and has been translated into over 25 languages. She also authored the nonfiction works Nine Parts of Desire, Foreign Correspondence and The Idea of Home, the 2011 Boyer Lectures. She was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies in 2006 and returned to Harvard as a visiting lecturer in 2021. Next year, she will be a visiting fellow at New College, Oxford. Dr Wendy Were is a cultural and creative leader who specialises in strategy and transformation. Her former roles include seven years as Executive Director, Advocacy and Development at the Australia Council for the Arts; Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Sydney Writers' Festival, Business Advisor at the Creative Industries Innovation Centre; and CEO of West Australian Music. After working in city shaping as Executive Director of Thought Leadership and Engagement at the Greater Cities Commission, she joined the University of Sydney in March 2023 as Director of Engagement, University Infrastructure. This pop-up playground by award-winning sculptor Sanné Mestrom invites children and adults alike to ‘break the rules’ and physically engage with art in the public realm. Mestrom’s prototype launches “ArtHaus,” a three-year collaboration between the Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre (SSSHARC) and the Sydney Nano Institute, which will explore sustainable fabrication methods and ways of ensuring more child-friendly urban environments. Participants work with curated objects from the collection to encourage learning through sensory engagement, observation and group discussions. As a highlight of the Alumni Festival, we invite you to join us for a Sydney Law School-hosted event featuring the University of Sydney Law School alumnae Georgia Dawson, winner of the 2023 Alumni Award for International Achievement, in conversation with Nicole Abadee. Georgia Dawson, a prominent leader in the legal profession, will reflect on her journey through Law School, her successful career working in top law firms, and her pioneering role as the first woman to lead Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as senior partner in the firm’s 280-year history. The event will provide an opportunity for attendees to gain insights into Georgia's leadership and experiences, including her commitment to championing diversity and making the legal profession more inclusive, particularly for women and the LGBTQI+ community. SpeakersGeorgia Dawson is the firm's senior partner and has a background in internal and regulatory investigations, complex multi-jurisdictional litigation, and compliance advice in relation to anti-money laundering, anti-bribery, corruption, and human rights. She has worked on significant cross-border mandates across a range of jurisdictions in APAC, Europe, Africa and Central Asia. Georgia has been named as one of Financial News’ Most Influential Women in Finance (2023, 2022 and 2021) and in 2021, she was recognised as an ALB Southeast Asia Law Awards Woman Lawyer of the Year. Georgia was also named an Innovative Leader in the Financial Times Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards 2020. She has been included by the Financial Times and Yahoo! in the OUTstanding Top 50 LGBT+ Ally Executives Role Model lists in 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018 and by Stonewall as its Global Senior Champion in 2019. Georgia is admitted to practice in Hong Kong, England & Wales and New South Wales, and she is a registered foreign lawyer in Singapore. She holds a first-class degree in law from the University of Sydney and a Master’s degree in international relations from Cambridge University, where she studied as a Chevening scholar. Nicole Abadee is a University of Sydney alumna. After a 20-year career in the law, practising as a barrister at the New South Wales Bar and then teaching International Law, she moved into the literary world. Nicole now writes about books and other things for Good Weekend and regularly interviews writers at writers’ festivals and other literary events. Part of “Arthaus,” the playground is the product of a three-year collaboration between Sydney Nano and the Sydney Social Sciences and Humanities Advanced Research Centre and invites children and adults alike to ‘break the rules’ and physically engage with the artwork. Mestrom, a senior lecturer and practice-led researcher at Sydney College of the Arts, has work held by the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artbank, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Shepparton Art Museum, and private collections internationally. Our speakers will unpack the transformative impact of the recent FIFA World Cup, share their personal stories of overcoming challenges, and reveal the strategies that have propelled them to the top levels of their respective sports. They'll also spotlight their fervent advocacy for fairness and inclusivity in Australian sports and the vital roles of institutions and the media in achieving this. This is a must-attend event for sports enthusiasts, gender equity advocates, and those interested in the future of Australian sports. Our speakers: • Chloe Dalton OAM is one of Australia’s few triple sport elite athletes, having played basketball (Sydney Uni Flames) and rugby professionally, Chloe currently plays AFLW for the Western Sydney Giants. Since then, the group has attracted over 80 million views and 1 million fans across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube and has gained the attention of artists such as Maroon5, Meghan Trainor and Dean Lewis. Formed in 1998 in Sydney’s inner-west, the 2004 album Skeleton Jar really started to spread the word about Youth Group, and the skill and depth of the extraordinary songwriting turned listeners into true believers. Scoring four and five-star reviews, it also made fans out of Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla, who invited Youth Group on tour with them in the US. Youth Group gained the attention of the hit drama ‘The O.C.’ music director, who featured the band’s song ‘Shadowland’ and their version of ‘Forever Young’ on the show. World-renowned LA label Epitaph signed the band to their roster for the US/Europe without ever having seen them play live! In 2006, Youth Group supported Coldplay on their tour of Australia. The band went on to release two more acclaimed albums, 2006’s Casino Twilight Dogs, featuring crowd favourites ‘Start Today Tomorrow’ and ‘Daisychains’, and in 2008 they released The Night Is Ours. Frontman of Youth Group Toby Martin is a lecturer in Contemporary Music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and the band is keen to make you feel Forever Young at Manning Bar! Chiara Kovac (she/her) is a 23-year-old folk-punk songwriter from the South Coast of NSW. Caught between an obsession with detailed story-telling lyrics and heavy guitars, Chiara finds her music powered less by genre and more by raw emotion. Sharing sonic and artistic kinship with Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin and Camp Cope, Chiara formed a live band in 2021 to begin alchemising a thrilling catalogue of music. In September 2023, Chiara and her band won the University of Sydney’s annual Battle of the Bands Competition, decided by a panel of industry professionals. They won the opportunity to perform at the ‘Someday Soon’ Festival, and she will be rocking the Manning Bar stage again at the Alumni Festival! “Chiara Kovac burns so bright it sears the retinas, sad songs played with joy and vim.
